Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has written to states and territories urging them to support his proposal for a national database of child sex offenders, saying parents should be able to see if sex criminals live nearby.

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation supports the call for an evidence based nationally consistent Public Register of Child Sex Offenders. This National Register is recommended alongside a comprehensive approach to reducing recidivism and preventing child sexual abuse.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe and the Morcombe Family personally have publicly supported and advocated for the development of a public sex offender register in Australia. Bruce and Denise Morcombe's call for the public register is referred to as Daniel's Law.

Bruce Morcombe said "Daniel's Law is gathering momentum.  This is a win for parents, carers and importantly our precious children. Today's announcement is music to my ears. Australia is one giant step closer to having a publicly accessible child sex offenders register."

Denise Morcombe said "Bruce and I support the Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton's announcement this morning and thank the Morrison government for this initiative. We also pay tribute to Senator Derryn Hinch for his relentless passion and unwavering focus to see a publicly accessible child sex offenders register in Australia."

Media are invited to attend a general press conference with Bruce and Denise Morcombe at Parliament Square Hobart at 1pm (Hobart Time).

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation welcomes the opportunity to join a Reference Group regarding the National Public Register of Child Sex Offenders as this consultation process continues.
